Shucking Oysters for the BC Cancer Foundation

October 25, 2023

Bearfoot Bistro, Whistler’s premier fine dining restaurant, and Sawmill Bay Shellfish, presenting sponsor, donate a cheque for $27,000 to Jennifer Northrup of the BC Cancer Foundation at the 7th annual Bearfoot Bistro World Oyster Invitational & Bloody Caesar Battle. The fundraising event, which takes place on the closing day of Cornucopia, Whistler’s Celebration of Food and Drink, draws oyster shuckers from around the world and oyster lovers from near and far. Competitors each shuck 30  oysters against the clock to be judged on speed and presentation of the product.

Last weekend’s event was a sell out – over 850 people attended and consumed more than 9,000 Sawmill Bay oysters.

Congratulations to Jason Nagy (Flyjin Restaurant, Montreal) who placed first in the competition, Jonathan Merrill (Chewies Steam & Oyster Bar, Vancouver) who took second place and Jason Thotsaraj (Huxkey Wallace, Seattle) who placed third. This gala event also features a Bloody Caesar Battle that pits BC bartenders against one another to create their signature version of this Canadian classic. Matt Whelan (Deep Cove Brewers and Distillers, North Vancouver) won the 2017 title.
