Mark your calendars to attend this special movie screening and oyster bar reception on June 11, 2017. The evening kicks off with an oyster reception – with special guest shucker, Chef Ned Bell at 6 PM.  The movie will screen from 7 – 8:15 PM and will be followed by a post screening reception (more oysters) with film maker, Shelly Solomon.

Long-time sustainable seafood ambassador, Ned Bell, is the Ocean Wise executive chef at Vancouver Aquarium. Bell’s cooking philosophy is globally inspired and locally created. His love of sport, travel and adventure have taken him around the world, creating memorable experiences and cooking up a storm along the way. Bell’s dedication to sustainable seafood has inspired many Canadian chefs to get involved in the cause – a movement that is having a meaningful impact on the way consumers think about the seafood they eat, where it comes from and how they, too, can help protect our oceans by making ocean-friendly seafood choices. Bell’s diverse background includes seven seasons on Food Network Canada’s Cook Like a Chef and he has been recognized as Canada’s Chef of the Year at Food Service and Hospitality magazine’s 2014 Pinnacle Awards, Best Overall and Rising Star by Where magazine and Top 40 Foodies Under 40 by Western Living magazine in 2008.

EBB AND FLOW: A Japanese family, an oyster and how they influenced the Pacific NW shellfish history

Ebb and Flow follows Jerry (Eiichi) Yamashita’s recounting of the family history around a campfire next to his shellfish tenure. The personal story spans the early days of the shellfish industry, the decline of the native oyster and his family’s role in introducing Pacific oyster culture to west coast aquaculture.   The movie depicts the history of oyster farming on the West Coast, gives a glimpse of a larger community of people working together to hold onto healthy shellfish resources and recognizes the Jerry Yamashita for his role in helping to save the shellfish farming industry from collapse in the 1930s.
